Banff Day 3

Having not seen much wildlife so far, I was getting a little antsy.  So I picked a running trail that guidebooks suggested may offer a glimpse of some wildlife.  However, we didn’t need to drive very far from the hotel when we came upon a deer crossing.

Other than some deadly mosquitos at the running trail there wasn’t much going on there. However, on our way back to the hotel we saw cars parked on both sides of the road, and a crowd of people taking photos of something.  Of course I made J stop the car, and got out with my camera.

An elk with a huge set of antlers.

A hulking elk with a huge set of antlers staring down at us.

The elk was just teasing all of us and not stepping out behind the bush.

The camera-shy elk was teasing all of us and not stepping out from behind the douglas fir.

Luckily, we got our chance to get up close to a smaller elk at the Surprise Corner.

At Lake Minnewanka I was hoping to see black bears, but ended up seeing big horn sheep crossing the dam.

On our way back to the hotel, we saw the deer again.

All in all, mission accomplished.  Even though we didn’t get to see any bears, but the huge elk and the close encounters more than made up for it.
