Running On The Beach

I’m not referring to running on the running path along side the beach, I’m referring to actual running on packed sand during low tide.  During our stay at the Bacara Resort we were at a loss as to how to squeeze in our long run as none of the staff seemed to have any idea where the best running trails were.  The resort is unlike most hotels equipped with one or two treadmills.  This place has an amazing fitness center rivaling a small sports club.

They have every equipment imaginable,

including a pilates room.

However, running on the treadmill was absolutely out of the question.

So we started exploring around the resort in the afternoon looking for running paths.  J noticed that the tide was starting to receded, and suggested we run on the beach.  I was a little hesitant as I’ve tried running on semi-wet sand before and it was a huge struggle.  However, I ran a few paces on the packed sand and determine it was indeed runnable.  The terrain was flat as pancake.

The sparse beach 'crowd' was thinning out as the sun was starting to set.

Towards the end of the 7+mile run, it was dark except for the stars in the sky and the lights dotting the pier and the oil rig in the distance.  It was an amazing experience, and this has to go down in my books as the BEST run ever (even with me losing footing at one point while attempting to jump a stream).
