I think I’ve figured out what’s causing my leg cramps during races, and why it started so early during the San Diego race.  My electrolytes were off, and the sodium level in particular was too low from all the sweating.  I started having problems earlier in San Diego because it was hotter and more humid than when I ran Tucson in December.  Thinking back I was probably on the verge of hyponatremia during my training long runs, as I was always craving salty foods after my sessions.  I will have to ‘salt load’ in addition to ‘carb load’ before the race, and will have to figure out how to replace sodium during the race (apparently my sports drink wasn’t enough as I had run with a bottle of it during both races).
